The European Union is strengthening anti-corruption oversight of crypto exchanges and e-money

15.10.2026

The European Union is taking decisive steps to strengthen the fight against corruption by extending transparency and accountability requirements to cryptocurrency exchanges and electronic money service providers. A new initiative under discussion in the European Parliament calls for including digital assets and related platforms in the scope of anti-corruption regulations. Lawmakers note that digital currencies and electronic money are increasingly being used to circumvent traditional controls, which poses risks to the financial system and undermines confidence in the market. According to the latest data from the European Central Bank, the volume of cryptocurrency transactions in the EU has exceeded 1.2 trillion euros over the past 12 months, underscoring the scale of the problem. As part of the new measures, crypto exchanges and e-money issuers will be required to implement enhanced know-your-customer (KYC) procedures, and the list of suspicious transactions subject to mandatory monitoring and reporting to the competent authorities will be expanded. Particular attention is being paid to data sharing between national and European regulators to identify and prevent corruption schemes.Industry representatives note that tightening the rules will increase market transparency but may also raise operational costs for companies. The new regulations are expected to take effect in the coming months, following agreement on the details among EU member states.
