ECB prepares technical standards for digital euro integration by summer 2026

TheEuropean Central Bank (ECB) has confirmed plans to implement technical standards for the integration of the digital euro, expected by summer 2026. The move aims to create a reliable and interoperable infrastructure for the future central bank digital currency (CBDC), ensuring a high degree of security and efficiency for payments across the eurozone.According to the ECB, the new standards will cover key aspects:
  • interoperability between banks and payment services;
  • ensuring the confidentiality of user data;
  • resilience to cyber threats;
  • scalability to support growing digital traffic.
In preparation for the launch of the digital euro, the ECB is actively cooperating with national regulators and the private sector. The implementation of standards is expected to accelerate the development of interoperable solutions for retail and corporate users. Experts estimate that the transition to the digital euro could affect more than 340 million eurozone citizens and more than 20 million businesses.The ECB stresses that standardization will be key to ensuring trust and widespread adoption of the digital euro, as well as to harmonizing the European payments market in a rapidly digitalizing economy.
